Background

• The Prophet, failing to spread Islam to Ta'if, was delighted to receive visitors from Yathrib.

First Pledge of 'Aqaba

• Soon after the events of Ta’if he met six men in Makka, who had come from Yathrib for the annual pilgrimage.
• They accepted Islam and went back to Yathrib and preached the message of Islam.
• They returned to Makka the following year with 12 men who took an oath at the mountain pass of Aqaba in 621 C.E / 11 A.H which is known as the First Pledge of Aqaba.
• Mus'ab bin Umair was sent with them to teach them about Islam.

Commandments

1. To worship one God,
2. Don't steal,
3. Don't commit adultery,
4. Don't kill their children,
5. Don't slander or disobey the Prophet.

Second Pledge of 'Aqaba

• The following year over 70 pilgrims came from Yathrib to take the oath with the Prophet, again at Aqabah.
• They invited the prophet to come to Yathrib as their leader.
• The Prophet told Muslims to start migrating.
